What you should know
On November 6, 2026, the Ministry of Justice announced revised residence rules and application guidance. The measures cover foreign-national children born outside marriage and their caregivers in ongoing proceedings for recognition of a specified Korean father or mother. Short-stay visa entrants may apply for G-1-3 status at their local immigration office. Evidence of the proceedings, possible parent-child relationship and caregiving relationship is required. Permission is granted for up to 6 months at a time; extensions depend on review of the proceedings and circumstances.
G-1-3 status does not itself authorize work. If work is needed for subsistence, consult the local immigration office. Humanitarian circumstances must be recognized following review by the Ministry's foreigner-rights council. After arranging the employer and employment contract, obtain separate permission for activities outside the residence status before starting work. Restricted sectors and professional qualification requirements still apply. See the attached official guide or contact 1345 for documents and procedures.
